Headingley Castle was built in the 1840's as a gentleman's residence in the gothic manner.  The client purchased the development from Leeds City Council with the support of the CRL design. This was acceptable to planning following an abortive previous sale when an over-intensive proposal failed to win listed building consent. 

 

CRL provided a full service from inception and was intensively involved in the detailed restoration of original features including the leaded lantern light over the stairwell, the preservation of the mural paintings in the original main drawing room and the retention of the tiled entrance at serious risk from dry rot active in the building at the time of purchase. 

 

The murals were discovered when the layers of wall paper were removed from the main room to reveal an image of the house when new, and a series of images of the Grand Tour. All were conserved and one - that of the house - was restored and is shown on the adjacent images. The restoration and retention of original plasterwork and fireplaces is a feature of the project.
